What can I use in place of a heart
The original so prone to breaking apart
when love is denied
Is there a viable substitute
one that's mainly bulletproof
Or at least keeps rejection from getting
deep inside --where love has done a number on me

There should be an alternative
one that allows me to go on living
without being so vulnerable to breaking
Can take defeat with a grain of salt
keeps going strong till new opportunity for love
comes along

It could solve so much heartache and pain
allow one to get back in the game
So inquiring minds want to know

What can be used in place of the heart
When the original abused, torn completely apart
Been through the wringer, love's the thing to blame

What's a reliable substitute
Would help if truly bulletproof
Or at least can deflect slings, arrows and 
narrow escapes
Prevent outside forces from gaining access 
making a mess of things

So I wait for an alternative, one that will keep
on beating --allow me to go on living
But not eat myself up inside --hide from love

Though I've given more than received
I'm beginning to have second thoughts
Yes, I'm caught betwixt and between
Need an alternative when it comes to loving

So will the strictly mechanical heart be 
on the market anytime soon
I can put down a deposit, though my real one
may not last till delivery time
Because, woe is me, there I go again
falling hopelessly --in love
