13 facts about this song
Album Appearance"The End" is a track from 'Abbey Road', the last album recorded by The Beatles, although not their final release.
Unique FeatureIt is the only song by The Beatles in which all four band members have a solo.
Instrumental SolosPaul McCartney, George Harrison, and John Lennon each perform two-bar guitar solos. They are arranged in the order of McCartney–Harrison–Lennon, repeated three times.
Drum SoloNotably, it contains Ringo Starr's only drum solo in The Beatles' discography. Ringo was generally opposed to drum solos, but was persuaded by the other band members to include one.
Lead VocalsAlthough Paul McCartney is the writer and the main vocalist of "The End," the band's other two primary songwriters, John Lennon and George Harrison, also provide backing vocals.
Famous LineThe song is well-known for its concluding lyrics "And in the end, the love you take is equal to the love you make," often quoted and referenced in various forms of media.
Original TitleThe track was originally titled "Ending."
CollaborationsAs with many Beatles tracks, the record producer George Martin and sound engineer Geoff Emerick were instrumental in shaping the final product. They added orchestral accompaniments that included a 12-violin, four-viola, four-cello, and harp ensemble.
One-Take RecordingThe orchestral part of "The End" was recorded in one take.
Musical StructureInstrumentally, the solos are based on the key of A and are over its dominant chord (E7). The same chord progression supports the "Love you" vocal phrase.
MisinterpretationDespite the song's name and placement at the end of 'Abbey Road', it was not intended to be a farewell song. McCartney has clarified in interviews that the song was meant more as a philosophical statement than a personal goodbye.
Derbyshire ConnectionParts of the song blend with another track "Her Majesty". This gapless transition technique was inspired by an idea from the BBC Radiophonic Workshop with sound pioneers like Delia Derbyshire, who were known for blending tracks in such a way.
Unplanned SeparationInterestingly, "Her Majesty" was actually meant to appear earlier in the album, but it was removed and mistakenly added to the master tape after 14 seconds of silence, creating a surprising secret track. This makes "The End" the last substantial song on the album.
