My grandad used to sing a song…

I’m wandering along on a freight cart
Bound for nobody knows where
I ran off from home just this morning
And my heart was heavy with care

I’m sorry for my poor mother
For all this things I have done
She called me a drunkard and gambler
Not fit to be called her son

I can’t find any record of this song existing or being recorded. Surely he didn’t write it himself. Can anyone help? It might be a WW2 song?
