Lyrics: Lilac trees a-bloomin' in the corner by the gate, Mammy in the little cabin door. Curly headed pickaninny comin' home so late, Cryin' 'cause his little heart is sore. And Mammy in the door Sits and croons as oft before: Just stay on this side of the high board fence. Don't mind what them white chiles do. My mother used to sing this song, back in the 1950s. She was born in 1914. I wonder if this was some sort of protest song about racism, although in today's language, it contains very racist words. There were more words to it, but I can't remember them. I'm interested in knowing the source of the song.more »
